Google has acquired Apture, a San Francisco based startup company that offers in page search solution using browser extensions. Apture was founded in 2007 by two Stanford computer science graduate students,Tristan Harris and Can Sar. Apture is currently funded by Clearstone Venture Partners and angel investors including Paul Maritz of VMWare.
Apture solves a common problem faced by web publishers with its in-page search technology. A visitor to a website typically moves away from the site really quickly. Apture claims that 30% of most publishers’ outbound traffic is lost to search.
To prevent the loss, Apture’s in page search technology offers one to highlight word/phrases in the page and immediately offer rich media relevant to the keyword. And the visitor can browse the best content right from the page. Apture highlights extension is available for Firefox, Chrome, or Safari. Explaining its solution for search leakage, Apture says in its website that Apture Highlights
lets you instantaneously access the power of Google search, and the richness of YouTube, Flickr, Twitter, and Wikipedia by just highlighting any word or phrase. With Apture’s in-page search technology, gone are the days of toggling between browser tabs to get additional information. Apture Highlights keeps information in one place, with as many content choices as you like. It’s fast, powerful, and fun.
Announcing the acquisition news in its website, Apture said that the Apture team will join Chrome team at Google and work towards improving Chrome experience.

Apture is Joining Google!
Since 2007, all of us here at Apture have worked hard to add new dimensions to the web. We’ve always believed that by transforming flat web pages into interactive multimedia experiences, we could enable readers to see, hear and truly experience the ideas on the page.
After enhancing more than a billion pages with our products, we think now is the best time to expand our efforts with another team just down the road that shares our vision of making the web better.
That’s right — we’ve been acquired by Google and will be joining the Chrome team to continue driving innovation and creating a better user experience on the web. The modern web is an amazing platform, so stay tuned for even more enhancements to your Chrome browsing experience.
Sincerely,
The Apture Team
