GoogleCodeIn2011 Google 2011 Code in Contest For School Students Begins 21 November Google announced that 2011 Google Code-in contest for pre-university students of age group 13-17 begins this Monday, Novermber 21.  Google Code-in Contest offers young students a unique opportunity to participate in open source development.  The contest lasts for 57 days till January 16, 2012.  The young participants can be part of online tasks for 18 different open source organizations.

With Google Code-In, Google aims to encourage young students to participate in open source initiatives by working on a variety of challenges related to open source software development. These tasks can be completed online and include “document translations, marketing outreach, software coding, and user experience research.”

The participants earn points for the tasks completed over the two months and win prizes like t-shirts, cash and certificates of completion; a t-shirt and certificate for completing at least one task and $100 for every three tasks completed up to $500 per contestant.  At the end of competition, the top ten participants with the highest points will receive a grand prize trip to Google headquarters in Mountain View, Calif.  with a parent or legal guardian.

During the last year’s Google Code-in contest 361 students from 48 countries completed 2,167 open source tasks. Google hopes to attract more students participating in Google Code-In contest this year.
