Fresh off predicting the future of smartphone OS market share, Gartner has come up with its prediction for tablet market share from 2010 to 2015. Gartner report says that Apple’s iOS will dominate the market share through 2015. However, over the next two years Apple’s indomitable lead on tablet market share will decrease and Android tablet will rise, but not enough to beat iOS by 2015.
Gartner says Apple currently holding 88% of all tablets in 2010 will continue to maintain its dominance in 2011 with 68.7%, in 2012 with 63.5% of tablet market. Apple will be at the top in 2015 with 47% market share. During the same time, Android will gain its foot hold in the tablet space from 14.2% in 2010 to 38.6% in 2015.
Gartner analysts said By reinventing tablet, Apple iPad is doing the same to tablet market as what iPhone did to the smartphone market. Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner, says that
Seeing the response from both consumers and enterprises to the iPad, many vendors are trying to compete by first delivering on hardware and then trying to leverage the platform ecosystem. Many, however, are making the same mistake that was made in the first response wave to the iPhone, as they are prioritizing hardware features over applications, services and overall user experience. Tablets will be much more dependent on the latter than smartphones have been, and the sooner vendors realize that the better chance they have to compete head-to-head with Apple.
