Gartner reports that Android will have grabbed nearly 50% of smartphone OS marker worldwide by end of 2012. Gartner says the by 2011 year end, Android will become the most popular OS with market share of 38.5% and it will build on its growth in 2012 to achieve 49% of market share.

Roberta Cozza, principal analyst at Gartner said

By 2015, 67 percent of all open OS devices will have an average selling price of $300 or below, proving that smartphones have been finally truly democratized. As vendors delivering Android-based devices continue to fight for market share, price will decrease to further benefit consumers. Android’s position at the high end of the market will remain strong, but its greatest volume opportunity in the longer term will be in the mid- to low-cost smartphones, above all in emerging markets.

Assuming that Apple does not come with any low priced smartphone, Gartner report predicts that Apple’s iOS’s share will slightly decrease after 2011, but still maintain the second position market share through 2014. On the other hand, the share of RIM will decline over the years due to strong competition in both consumer and business sectors.

Gartner also reports that Microsoft’s windows will gain due to the Nokia-Microsoft alliance. Gartner says that the Windows phone’s gain in market share will be smaller than what Nokia’s Symbian achieved. This is where Gartner’s prediction differs from a recent report from IDC.
