Ever wondered what happened with the Internet in 2010? And how many sites, users are there, Pingdom, website’s uptime monitoring company has collated answers to a number of such interesting questions on Internet 2010. Pingdom used a variety of sources to get these interesting numbers.

Email By Numbers

In 2010, the total number of emails sent is 107 trillion. Yes, it is in trillions. But guess what,
out the 107 trillion emails 89.1% of emails were spam. What a waste?

Websites By Numbers

As of December 2010, there are 255 million websites on the internet and this is an increase of 21.4 million when compared to 2010. At the end of 2010, about 89 million has .COM domain names and about 80 million has the country code top-level domains (e.g. .CN, .UK, .DE, etc.).

Internet Users By Numbers

As of June 2010, there are 1.97 billion Internet users worldwide with an increase of 14% since the previous year. Asia tops the list of Internet users with 825 million users and Europe holds the second place with 475 million users. And North America has 266.2 million Internet users.

Social Media By Numbers

2010 being the year of social media, the stats associated with anything social is mind boggling. As of September 2010, there are 175 million people on Twitter and at the end of 2010 there are 600 million active Facebook users. 25 billion tweets were on Twitter in 2010 and 30 billion – pieces of content (links, notes, photos, etc.) shared on Facebook every month. Twitter added 100 million new accounts in 2010 and Facebook added 250 million new people on Facebook in 2010.

Videos and Images By Numbers

YouTube users watch a whopping 2 billion videos per day on YouTube. And users add 35 Hours of video to YouTube every minute. Facebook is increasingly becoming the a place to share and watch videos. Facebook users watch 2+ billion videos per month on Facebook and they upload 20 million videos to Facebook per month.

Flickr and Facebook dominate on the images side. As of September 2010, Flickr hosts 5 billion photos and 3000+ photos are uploaded per minute to Flickr. Facebook users upload 3+ billion photos per month to Facebook.
