The next generation messaging system crosses the barrier of devices and type of messages like SMS, email, and chat. Mark Zuckerberg called it a Social Inbox for all of our online communications.

The new messaging system has three features; seamless messaging, conversational history and social inbox, that makes it stand out from simple email. With the new seamless messages from all devices, one can simply choose a name and type a message without worrying about the type of messages or devices.

Facebook is also giving out an @facebook.com email address to every Facebook users if they want. Facebook.com address enables communication with everyone, irrespective of whether one has a Facebook account or not. Facebook says

To be clear, Messages is not email. There are no subject lines, no cc, no bcc, and you can send a message by hitting the Enter key. We modeled it more closely to chat and reduced the number of things you need to do to send a message. We wanted to make this more like a conversation.

Explaining what a social inbox is Facebook said that in the new messaging system, your inbox will contain all types of messages from a user’s friends and their friends, but nothing from unimportant messages like your monthly bills. These “other” messages will go into an “Other” folder and one can look at them separately.

If the message is from somebody who does not have a Facebook account, it will also go to the “Other” folder. One can also easily move that “conversation into the Inbox, and all the future conversations with that friend will show up there”.

Facebook said it is launching Messages and email addresses gradually and will reach everyone over the next few months.
