Google is luring Yahoo users to use more of Google products by making it easier to sign-in to Google account. In its blog, Google announced that with the use of an Internet standard called OpenID, Yahoo users can sign-up for Google products just using their Yahoo accounts.
Until now Yahoo! users wanting to sign up for a Google Account, like Gmail, Reader, Docs, and AdWords, using their existing Yahoo email address have to go through a number of time consuming steps. Google knows the common problem affecting users and describes the annoying problem nicely in its blog as follows.
How many times have you created a new account at a website and seen a message that said: “Thank you for creating an account. To activate your new account, please access your email and click the verification URL provided.”
Even though you just want to start using the website, this lengthy process requires you to manually perform a whole bunch of steps—including switching to your mailbox, trying to find the message the website sent you (which might be in your Spam folder), opening the message, clicking the link, etc.
Google, wanting to attract more Yahoo users to Google products, has improved the sing-up problem with the help of OpenID. Yahoo! users who sign up with Google will a page like the one that is below. The page will have a button “Verify by signing in at yahoo.com” and clicking on it will sends the users to Yahoo! for verification.
After clicking on the button, Yahoo will ask your permission to share your account with Google like show below.

Once you give your conent, you are all set to use any of Google’s products, such as Google Groups, Docs, Reader, AdWords, etc. Although the new feature is applicable for Yahoo! users now, Google is planning to add other email providers. The next in line would be probably hotmail user, given its user base is large and Google would like to have a share of it.
