Google announced in its Gmail blog that it has released a new version of Gmail App for Android. The good news about the announcement is that from now on Gmail updates are not tied down to Android OS. Using the Gmail app, even if you are running on an old version of Android OS, you can enjoy the benefits of latest Gmail features. Google says
Now you can get new Gmail stuff faster without having to wait for system updates.
The new updated Gmail app requires Froyo (Android 2.2). You are lucky, if you have a Nexus One, HTC EVO, Motorola Droid 2 or Motorola Droid (and Droid X by tomorrow?). Here are the new features of the Gmail app.
- No matter how long the email is, now the most important message actions will be at the top of the screen.
- An easier way to view the previous message content. Just tap “Show quoted text” to see the previous message.
- The new Gmail app has limited support for Priority Inbox: Google’s approach to keep our inbox clean. After enabling Priority Inbox in the desktop version of Gmail, one will see an “Important” label that shows all messages flagged as important. One can also add a shortcut to “Important” to home screen.
