Facebook Building a Phone: TechCrunch Reports

facebook1 Facebook Building a Phone: TechCrunch ReportsThe hottest tech news/rumor for the weekend is pretty hard to believe with potentially huuuuge impact. TechCrunch reports that Facebook is secretly building its own low end smartphone to arrest the growing power of iPhone and Androids. Just like Apple and other phone makers, Facebook is working on the software and a third party will build the phone.

TechCrunch reports that Joe Hewitt and Matthew Papakipos are secretly working on the project and even most of the Facebook staff are unaware of the secret project. Matthew Papakipos was with Google till early summer and was leading Google Chrome OS project. TechCrunch also reasons that one of the main reasons for quitting Google should have to be more interesting than Google Chrome OS and Facebook phone definitely fits the bill.

The report goes on to speculate that the Facebook phone would be a low end and very affordable phone priced in the range of $50. The main feature of the phone would be easier integration into Facebook and the ability to pay phone bill using Facebook Credits.
