Intel has been wanting to put a sticker that says “Intel Inside” on your smartphones for a while. Fresh off from buying the security giant McAfee and a collaboration with Nokia on a research center, Intel made one more that will make Intel one step closer to achieve its mobile goal. Today, Intel announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Infineon’s Wireless Solutions (WLS) for $1.4 billion.
Infineon’s wireless wing WLS is a leading company that makes one of the chips that goes inside entry level low cost phones to smartphones like iPhone. In its press release Intel said after the acquisition WLS will remain as standalone business and keep serving its current customers. Intel is planning to make use of WLS to make “connected computing ubiquitous from smartphones to laptops to embedded computing”.
Paul Otellini, Intel president and CEO, said
The global demand for wireless solutions continues to grow at an extraordinary rate. The acquisition of Infineon’s WLS business strengthens the second pillar of our computing strategy — Internet connectivity — and enables us to offer a portfolio of products that covers the full range of wireless options from Wi-Fi and 3G to WiMAX and LTE. As more devices compute and connect to the Internet, we are committed to positioning Intel to take advantage of the growth potential in every computing segment, from laptops to handhelds and beyond.
