Gmail Throws Lifeline with Priority Inbox

The days of being happy at seeing an unread email when you open your inbox are over long time back. Now, with the flood of emails coming 24/7, perennially our inbox is filled with thousands of unread emails. Do you suffer from this email overload and wince at looking at your inbox? Don’t worry, help is coming to you. Obviously it has to be from Google, which opened the bottomless inbox.

Priority Inbox to Solve Email Overload

Google introduce “Priority Inbox”, a new way of taking on information overload in Gmail. Needless to say, Gmail Priority Inbox is experimental and in beta. Google says that with thousands of emails in your inbox,

It’s time-consuming to figure out what needs to be read and what needs a reply.

Introducing Priority Inbox Google says that on a high level, dealing with lots of mails is kind of like dealing with spam. Gmail has one of the best spam filters that can sift the real ones from the pile of incoming mails. Google has developed a method that uses Gmail’s spam filter to address the problem. Now, Gmail’s spam filter not only classify a real spam, but also help to prioritize the not-so important mails from the important ones.

The way Gmail’s Priority Inbox works is pretty simple to understand. Earlier, Gmail was classifying an incoming message into two classes; spam and real. Now Gmail needs classify an email in to more than two classes, checking the real messages for its priority. Google says,

As messages come in, Gmail automatically flags some of them as important. Gmail uses a variety of signals to predict which messages are important, including the people you email most (if you email Bob a lot, a message from Bob is probably important) and which messages you open and reply to (these are likely more important than the ones you skip over). And as you use Gmail, it will get better at categorizing messages for you.

You can help it get better by clicking the buttons at the top of the inbox to correctly mark a conversation as important or not important. (You can even set up filters to always mark certain things important or unimportant, or rearrange and customize the three inbox sections.)

Priority Inbox is Your Personal Assistant

Google sees Priority Inbox as a personal assistant who can help you focus on the messages with no need to specify complex rules. After a successful internal testings Google found that the new Priority Inbox is more useful and needs more people try out to improve.

Gmail is gradually rolling out Priority Inbox to all Gmail users over next week. If it is available to you, you will see “New! Priority Inbox” link in the top right corner of your Gmail account.
