Google announced that it is going to stop selling the Google Phone: Nexus One from its web store and it will make the phone available through the retail stores soon. Earlier in January, Google unveiled the much anticipated Google Phone and started selling the phone only through its website.
The idea of selling the phone directly to the customers was appealing and Google claimed it as a new approach to way to buy mobile phone. However, Google immediately ran into trouble in providing customer service for the people who bought the phone. Also, Nexus One sales was not that impressive. Apple iPhone and Droid sold one million within three months compared to meager ~130,000 Nexus One phones.
Google Accepts Nexus One Failure
Google expressed happiness over how the effort put into Nexus One development has helped other Android devices, like the HTC Evo 4G from Sprint and the Verizon Droid Incredible by HTC. However, it was not happy with the result of selling Google phone through Google online store. Accepting the failure of Nexus One sales model, Google said
But, as with every innovation, some parts worked better than others. While the global adoption of the Android platform has exceeded our expectations, the web store has not. It’s remained a niche channel for early adopters, but it’s clear that many customers like a hands-on experience before buying a phone, and they also want a wide range of service plans to chose from.
Switching from online mode to retail mode of selling, Google announced that Nexus One will be available in more countries soon. Google will stop selling Nexus One on its web store, once it has increased the retail availability on Nexus One. Google will also use the web store as a “window to showcase a variety of Android phones available globally”.
The blog stressed that
Innovation requires constant iteration. We believe that the changes we’re announcing today will help get more phones to more people quicker, which is good for the entire Android ecosystem: users, partners and also Google.
