Apple finds under-aged employees

The iPhone you are holding now could have components made by a 15 year old kid. Apple’s auditing has found three cases, where the supply base contractors used underage employees in violation of Apple’s policy. The audit also reveals other violations and Apple’s corrective action plans.

Apple has supply base contractor facilities in a number of Asian countries including China, Malaysia,  Taiwan, and Thailand.
To make sure the Apple products are produced in socially and environmentally sound conditions, Apple has a rigorous program called Apple Supplier Code of Conduct program. As part of this program, Apple audits their facilities every year and tries to improve the working conditions in the facilities.

Apple’s 2010 progress report on their Supplier Responsibility details the audit and corrective action programs. It reveals that the three facilities  had employed 15 year old kids in the countries where the legal age to work is 16 years. It has found that the 11 under-aged employees were hired previously and are no longer under aged or working now. After finding these Apple has put some measures to prevent under-aged employees.
Other violations
In addition to under-age employee violations, the audit also revealed violations involving  excessive recruitment fees,  non-certified vendors for hazardous waste disposal, and falsified records given during the audit.
